Senior AV / Theatre Technician
King’s College London does not have a drama department or teach theatre, but students undertake productions as an outside interest which we support in the Greenwood Theatre, a venue also hired by external clients.
This role involves providing supervision, training, and technical support for a wide range of stage events, taking responsibility for the venue and its users.
The AV/Theatre Technician will provide high‑level customer support and assistance to staff, students, and visitors using AV equipment for teaching, lecturing, conferences, or external events. Support will be under the direction of the AV Supervisor, Theatre Manager, or on own initiative at the assigned site. The role will primarily be based at our Guy’s Campus, covering lecture theatres, classrooms, meeting rooms, and other spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Support users and maintain devices, including Crestron control systems, PCs, data projectors, PA systems, smart boards, visualisers, lecture capture, and other AV equipment.
- Assist with student and external productions in the Greenwood Theatre: supervising groups, providing training, technical support, and ensuring user safety.
- Manage AV bookings and ensure required equipment is available and functional for lectures, functions, and events.
- Use remote tools to monitor and assist users, record audio and video of lectures and events, and provide Microsoft Teams support for hybrid meetings and HyFlex teaching.
- Arrange and support live events, video‑production requests, and maintenance issues.
- Work evenings and weekends as required.
Required Skills and Experience
- Good standard of written and spoken English.
- Significant prior experience in providing audio‑visual services.
- Broad technical knowledge of audio, video, multimedia, standards, formats, and delivery.
- Excellent customer‑service skills suitable for high‑profile events.
- Experience in technical theatre disciplines such as lighting, sound, stage management, and projection.
- Excellent diagnostic and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and solve problems jointly.
- Creative thinking to anticipate and solve problems with corrective action.
- Proactive, flexible, and responsive approach to work.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet challenging deadlines.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in production of events from conception to completion.
- AV‑related technical qualification.
- Theatre‑related technical qualification.
- Membership of a recognised AV or theatre organisation (e.g., AVIXA, AES, IOA, ABTT).
- First aid, fire safety, or other health and safety training.
