Overview
The role of a Support Services Gardener is to provide grounds maintenance and gardening services, maintaining grounds, roads, and paths within all property of the organisation in order that they are kept in a safe and presentable condition, and will also contribute to the maintenance of the building fabric within the organisation.
Main duties of the job
- Ensure a clean external environment for patient care in accordance with health, safety and compliance requirements and NHS Property Services policies and procedures.
- Trim hedges, move lawns, weeding paved surfaces and garden beds, prune, plant, sew seeds, litter pick, cut grass, spray weed killing, sweep roads, clear road gullies, clear leaves, improve landscaping, clear winter snow and ice, gritting of roads and footpaths, transporting materials and green waste.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
- Maintain gardens, roads, pathways and drains to be safe and presentable.
- Participate in operation of planned maintenance schemes, inspections and gardening according to agreed procedures.
- Keep tools, machinery and equipment clean and maintained; report defects or failures to line manager.
- Record damage to building fabric and report immediately.
- Store equipment and materials safely in compliance with COSHH.
- Follow landscape drawings and manufacturer specifications with reference to the Team Leader when required.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out a wide range of gardening and grounds maintenance tasks across multiple sites.
- Grass cutting, weeding, pruning and general landscaping duties.
- Ensure roads, paths and external areas are clean, safe and accessible.
- Support seasonal activities such as gritting during winter months.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain high standards across all locations.
- Safely use vehicles and equipment as required.
- Can handle routine tasks and social interactions within a work environment. Ability to absorb policy and guidance necessary for the role.
Skills & experience
- Previous experience in gardening, grounds maintenance or a similar outdoor role.
- Full UK driving licence (essential for travel between sites and operation of work vehicles).
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- A proactive and flexible approach to work.
Qualifications
- Recognised apprenticeship in grounds maintenance or approved qualification.
