Position Overview
Senior Graphic and Interaction Designer (12 months+ contract initially with potential extensions). Hybrid based in Newcastle, London, Leeds, Manchester, Blackpool or Sheffield – flexible.
Rate: £Market Rates per day via Umbrella.
SC or eligible for SC clearance.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and iterate prototypes using appropriate techniques (e.g., sketching, wireframes, high‑fidelity designs, coded prototypes)
- Demonstrate the value of prototyping to teams and stakeholders
- Apply user‑centred design practices within agile environments
- Use quantitative and qualitative user data to inform and validate design decisions
- Conduct user‑centred analysis, translating insights into meaningful design outcomes
- Build and test interfaces, contributing to both simple and complex systems integration
- Collaborate with developers to ensure design feasibility and implementation quality
- Communicate design concepts, insights, and recommendations effectively across teams
- Tailor communication outputs (e.g., presentations, visuals, prototypes) to different audiences
- Ensure designs meet accessibility standards and inclusive design principles
- Contribute to design systems, consistency, and best practices across services
- Mentor junior designers and support capability development within teams
Key Skills & Experience
- Strong experience in interaction design and graphic/visual design within digital services
- Proven expertise in prototyping techniques (sketching, wireframing, high‑fidelity and/or coded prototypes)
- Solid understanding of when and how to apply different prototyping approaches
- Experience working in user‑centred agile environments
- Strong understanding of design, technology, and data principles
- Proven ability to conduct user‑centred analysis using both qualitative and quantitative data
- Ability to translate insights into clear design outcomes and recommendations
- Experience contributing to systems integration and interface design
- Strong communication skills, with ability to tailor analysis and insight for different audiences
- Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
Desirable skills/knowledge/experience
- Prior experience within Central Government / GDS environments
- Active SC Clearance or SC eligible
- Familiarity with GOV.UK Design System and service standards
- Experience supporting service assessments and design governance
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG)
- Experience working on large‑scale, complex digital transformation programmes
- Experience mentoring designers or leading design workstreams
