Project Manager (GEOGUARD)
Salary: Grade 6 – £31,236 – £36,636 per annum (pro rata)
Contract Type: Part‑Time (17.5 hours per week / 0.5 FTE), Fixed Term – 27 months (possible 6‑month extension)
Rewards and Benefits: 33 days annual leave plus 9 days for buildings closed (pro rata)
About the Project: The Lyell Centre for Earth and Marine Sciences at Heriot‑Watt University is seeking a part‑time Project Manager to support the European Union/Scottish Enterprise funded GEOGUARD project – De‑risking Geothermal Heat Extraction from Tight Hot Sedimentary Aquifer. The role involves coordinating research and knowledge‑exchange activities, organising meetings, workshops, webinars and supporting the development of promotional materials.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Overall day‑to‑day management of the GEOGUARD project, including preparing timelines, milestones and ensuring deliverables are met.
- Prepare and submit internal and external reporting on schedule.
- Maintain close working links with internal and external stakeholders.
- Organise workshops, webinars, summer schools and hackathons.
- Monitor and produce collated reports, document risks and delays.
- Ensure effective communication with all stakeholders, including consultation and expectation management.
- Develop and review performance against milestones; manage risk and issues.
- Support Heriot‑Watt Professional Services with financial and outcome reporting to sponsors.
- Support implementation of the project data‑management plan.
Essential Criteria
- Degree (or equivalent) in a business, financial or scientific discipline.
- Experience managing projects with digital outcomes and open‑source code development.
- Experience organising hackathons, summer schools, hybrid workshops and webinars.
- Demonstrable leadership and senior‑management experience, motivating team members and building relationships.
- Experience working in an academic/HEI environment.
- Project and financial management skills for projects of varying size.
- Organisational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills for technical and non‑technical challenges.
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate degree or equivalent in project management or a relevant discipline.
- Experience implementing systems in an educational setting.
- Proven ability to apply project‑management methodologies across projects.
- Flexible approach to work and responsibilities.
- Energy and enthusiasm for the project.
- Experience within the energy transition sector.

- Highly developed project‑management skills, able to manage projects independently.
