Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and well-motivated pharmacist to manage and develop a high quality pharmacy service to patients within the Trust’s Respiratory Services. The successful candidate will be embedded within the respiratory team and take a lead on specialist clinical pharmacy services – ensuring that an optimal, safe and efficient clinical service is delivered with all aspects of medicines safety and governance requirements in place.

We are looking for someone with drive, enthusiasm and commitment. You will have excellent people skills and the ability to work with and influence staff at many levels both internally and externally to the Trust.

It is expected that the successful applicant will be an experienced pharmacist with significant previous experience of working in an acute hospital setting.

We are a progressive department and are keen to embrace innovative ideas. Following significant investment, our pharmacy department has led the innovations in automated storage (Omnicell) across all areas of our new Midland Metropolitan Hospital, and improved drug security, utilising Abloy keys, across the rest of the organisation. Robotic dispensing is well established and we have successfully implemented Electronic Prescribing and Administration throughout the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The pharmacy department at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust is a professional, forward thinking department which gives all staff the opportunity to develop their full potential.

The successful candidate will be a vital senior member of the pharmacy clinical ward services team, providing high quality pharmaceutical services to the respiratory team, as well as contributing to core ward commitments, including weekend and on call services.

Other duties as a senior pharmacist include line management and ongoing supervisor support for rotational pharmacists, trainee pharmacists and undergraduate students. The post holder will need to be able to monitor prescribing patterns and medicine expenditure on the respiratory ward identifying any outlying spend. Successful candidate must be able to identity Cost Improvement Programmes related to medicines used within specialist clinical areas and work closely with our high cost drugs team. SWBH isa nationally recognised specialist center for tuberculosis. The successful candidate will also support the Trust’s TB team.

Working for our organisation

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) serves Birmingham and the Black Country – one of the country’s most culturally diverse areas. It’s a friendly and welcoming place – a place where you can belong, and a place where you can grow.

We care for our patients, we care about our population, and we care about our people.

Our values – Ambition, Respect and Compassion – are at the heart of who we are. They guide us every step of the way; how we work with each other, and how we look after our patients and their families; how we respect and value the rich diversity of our team and our community.

Our Trust has always aspired to be more than a hospital, more than a healthcare provider. Our purpose is “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population.” It is what inspires, drives, and unites us every day. It’s what makes us unique.

We want working at SWB to feel like more than just a job. We want our Trust to be a place where you can feel you belong. A place where you feel happy, safe, and rewarded. A place where you can develop your career in whatever way you choose. When we say we’re ‘with you all the way’ we want you to know that we mean it.
