Summary
The job holder will be committed to prison workshops being places of structure and discipline. They will provide prisoners with a work experience that better mirrors employment outside of prison, ensuring high standard services while maintaining security and control at all times.
Although non‑operational and without line management responsibilities, the role includes workshop and prisoner management responsibilities and is rotational.
On an exceptional short‑term basis, the job holder may supervise prisoners in specialist workshops.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties
- Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop.
- Induct prisoners into the workshop, train them in health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tools use, ensuring all tools, equipment and raw materials are safe, secure and properly accounted for.
- Support prisoners where required; tailor learning and training to individual needs, set work schedules and manage targets and quality standards.
- Supervise, manage and control prisoners safely and securely, overseeing performance, motivation, discipline and development. Conduct metal‑detector scans or rub‑down searches.
- Initiate product development reviews to maintain output levels and provide variety of work and experience.
- Contribute to risk and health & safety assessments on consumables and the workshop; assist with specialist area risk reviews.
- Contribute to prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, ACCT and SIRs by providing information to case managers. Complete ACCT, VRIR and SIR forms as required and contribute to IEP reports.
- Maintain regular communication via radio net in accordance with Local Security Strategy.
- Request materials and estimate usage to meet work targets while ensuring quality assurance against product specification.
- Log attendance and approve prisoner hours worked and wages, including piece‑work when appropriate.
- Attend and contribute to relevant meetings.
- Provide administrative support for workshop activities, preparing documentation for managers and maintaining systems per local agreements.

Hours of Work
Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week (excluding unpaid breaks). Part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing patterns are also considered where they meet the role demands.
Working Arrangements & Further Information
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This involves working from a base location, various MoJ sites, or from home, provided the role can be performed within the UK.
For nationally advertised roles, the successful candidate will be appointed to an MoJ office or a Justice Collaboration Centre/Justice Satellite Office following pre‑employment checks.
