Overview
We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary school in Leeds from September 2026. This is a rewarding opportunity for an individual who is passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and helping them achieve their full potential.
Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH needs
- Assist in managing challenging behaviour in a calm and effective manner
- Support the delivery of tailored learning activities set by the teacher
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students to promote engagement
- Help implement individual support plans and behaviour strategies
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams
- Monitor and record student progress and behaviour
- Support students’ emotional wellbeing and personal development
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
Pre-requisites
- Previous experience working with SEMH, SEN, or challenging behaviour (school-based or similar setting)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach
- Ability to build rapport with secondary-aged students
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
- A proactive and adaptable attitude
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to obtain one)
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, equivalent, or degree) are desirable but not essential
