Summary
This is a non‑operational role in an establishment. The role holder will supervise, provide knowledge and skills to prisoners in non‑specialist workshops, where no qualifications are being delivered and the holder is not required to train prisoners to attain required qualifications. The position involves workshop and prisoner management responsibilities and will be rotational.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties
- Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop.
- Induct prisoners to the workshop and train them in health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tool usage, and ensure all tools and raw materials are safe, secure and accurately accounted for.
- Provide support for prisoners, tailoring learning and training to individual needs, setting work schedules and managing targets/quality standards, and maintaining the contractual delivery.
- Supervise, manage and control prisoners safely and securely, overseeing their performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development. Carry out metal detector scans or rub‑down searches of prisoners attending and leaving workshops.
- Initiate product development reviews to sustain workshop output levels and provide variety of work and experience for prisoners.
- Contribute to risk and health and safety assessments on consumables and specialist areas.
- Assist in preparing prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, ACCT and SIR reports, violence‑reduction incident reports and incentive earned privilege reports.
- Maintain regular communication via radio net in line with the Local Security Strategy.
- Request material and estimate usage to meet work targets while ensuring quality assurance against product specifications.
- Log attendance, approve prisoner hours worked and wages, including recording piecework where appropriate.
- Attend and contribute to relevant meetings as required.
- Provide administrative support for workshop activities, prepare relevant documentation for verification/quality checking and maintain and update systems in line with local agreements.

Hours of Work
Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week, excluding unpaid breaks. Part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing patterns are considered where they meet the demands of the role and business needs.
