This project placement is to assist the Curator of Leeds History with the cataloguing, digitisation and research of Leeds Museum’s historic photographic collections which include lantern slides, glass negatives and historic photographs. The role involves creating and editing catalogue records for public access, as well as creating content for blog and social media posts. The work also includes identifying and researching images to add to the www.leodis.net website. The individual will also support existing volunteers who are scanning images.
About the Role
The role offers valuable experience of hands‑on working with historic collections, object handling, cataloguing skills, learning how to structure data, research experience and a greater knowledge of Leeds history. It will enable Leeds Museums and Galleries to make better use of their photographic collections and increase public awareness of these valuable collections.
Responsibilities
- Create and edit catalogue records for public access.
- Develop content for the blog and social media posts.
- Identify and research images for the www.leodis.net website.
- Support volunteers who scan images.
- Contribute to public engagement through community engagement, learning and exhibition programmes.
- Provide a high standard of customer service – welcoming and engaging when assisting with community engagement, supporting activities, dealing with public enquiries, collating customer feedback or working with volunteers.
- Work alongside other staff to ensure accessibility and inclusivity within our spaces.
- Contribute to collections management – maintain attention to detail in documentation, digitisation, and online access, handling and packing of collections.
- Provide physical and administrative support for displays and exhibitions and write exhibition text under guidance from others.
- Source and provide interesting and accurate information under instruction and guidance.
- Liaise with other staff in a courteous manner.
- Show a commitment to training relating to H&S, safeguarding, information governance and the site.
- Be curious, open to new experiences, working creatively and being reflective.
- Be passionate about the collection and innovative in its uses with audiences.
- Deliver accurate and timely timesheets for salary payments.
- Promote an outward looking, positive image of the service at all times.
- Promote, adhere to and apply consistently the Leeds Safeguarding Boards and Leeds City Council Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Be responsible for your own H&S at work.
Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues and partners.
- Prioritise and organise own work flexibly according to the direction of the supervisor.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Good computer skills – able to use word processing and e‑mail.
- Good literacy and numeracy skills.
- Experience of working or volunteering in a public facing role.
