The Opportunity
Senior Safety Engineer
to lead delivery of formal safety and assurance activities across multidisciplinary projects, primarily within the railway domain. You’ll be a key client interface, managing technical quality, mentoring junior engineers, and shaping safety strategies that support complex infrastructure programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the production and review of safety assurance deliverables in line with CSM-RA and EN 50126/8/9 standards.
- Chair HAZID/HAZOP workshops and oversee hazard management using IBM DOORS or equivalent tools.
- Independently write risk assessments
- Provide technical assurance through internal review, sign-off, and guidance to teams.
- Drive innovation in safety processes, tools, and delivery methods.
- Support bids and proposals, shaping technical solutions and cost estimates.
- Manage project scope, quality, and budgets in collaboration with the Managing Director.
- Build long-term client relationships and contribute to the company’s reputation for excellence.
- Represent the company at industry forums or working groups where appropriate.
Required Experience
- Degree (BEng/MEng/MSc) in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
- Proven track record delivering safety assurance within complex, safety-critical industries.
- Strong knowledge of EN 50126/8/9, IEC 61508, and CSM-RA.
- Experience performing and guiding safety analyses (FTA, FMEA/FMECA, GSN, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical workstreams and mentor others.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Working knowledge of DOORS and MS Excel for hazard tracking.
- Will have in-depth knowledge of at least one rail discipline such as Signalling, Track, Power, Rolling Stock etc.
- Knowledge of RAM and systems engineering.
- Experience within rail signalling, traction power, or station systems.
- Familiarity with IRSE certification (Modules C/D).
- Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and promoting a positive safety culture.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) — achieved or near completion
