Apply for the Senior Backend Engineer (up to £180k)
Location: London
Job Description:

The role

This company is building an AI workspace that processes sensitive financial data for some of the world’s largest banks and regulated institutions. They operate where SOC 2, GDPR, and FCA compliance are not just buzzwords, but fundamental requirements. Backed by leading investors, they recently secured a significant Series A, widely reported as one of the largest in its category, to deepen their platform’s capabilities.

You’ll join a senior backend bench, reporting directly to the founders, at the intersection of AI and finance. This is a staff‑track IC seat with visible influence, not a layer in a larger team. You won’t just maintain existing systems; you’ll architect and scale the core backend services and data pipelines that power an AI platform handling critical financial workloads.

The work

  • Architect and build scalable backend services and APIs for an AI workspace processing sensitive financial data.
  • Design and optimize data pipelines for large-scale financial datasets, ensuring accuracy and high performance.
  • Go deep on database schemas and queries, tuning PostgreSQL for high‑throughput, low‑latency operations across distributed systems.
  • Partner with ML engineers to productionise complex models, integrating them seamlessly into backend systems.
  • Lead technical design reviews and mentor junior and mid-level engineers, shaping the engineering culture as the platform scales.

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of professional backend engineering experience, with a proven track record of building and scaling production systems.
  • Expert‑level proficiency in Python and modern web frameworks, particularly FastAPI, having shipped production services.
  • Deep expertise in PostgreSQL, including query optimization, indexing strategy, and performance tuning under real load.
  • Experience running event‑driven architectures with message brokers (e.g., Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ, Kafka) and task queues (e.g., Celery) at non‑trivial throughput.
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems, cloud platforms (Azure preferred), Docker/Kubernetes, and robust security practices (authn/authz, encryption, data handling). Experience in regulated environments (SOC 2, GDPR, FCA) is a significant plus.
