Job Overview
We are looking for a motivated individual to join our Mortuary team as a Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT). The successful post holder will support the existing team of APTs and undertake a range of duties to contribute to the efficient and effective running of the mortuary service.
The role requires effective and sensitive communication with bereaved relatives and the routine handling of extremely sensitive issues such as explaining post‑mortem procedures and religious concerns.
Commitment to completing Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology is expected while working in the Mortuary.
This role will not be eligible for sponsorship; applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
Main Duties
- Facilitate the receipt and release of deceased patients, ensuring accurate documentation in accordance with SOPs and HTA standards.
- Liaise with and update the Bereavement Office on a daily basis regarding inpatient deaths and viewings.
- Support Anatomical Pathology Technicians, medical and non‑medical staff, Coroner’s Officers and others in conducting viewings, attending to bereaved relatives, and conducting post‑mortems.
- Carry out general administrative duties across the department, providing accurate data entry using the laboratory information management system.
- Respond to enquiries and telephone calls that do not require result interpretation; communicate with all grades of staff.
- Plan and organise daily tasks to ensure accurate and timely discharge of duties.
- Ensure safe handling of hazardous and infectious materials according to defined protocols.
- Maintain general cleaning and housekeeping.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date knowledge base and attend relevant meetings.
- Contribute to and maintain high professional standards, ensuring compliance with mandatory standards, departmental, directorate, Trust and statutory policies, procedures, professional codes of conduct and personal development needs.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- GCSEs in Sciences, Maths and English (Grades A‑C / 4‑9 or equivalent).
Experience
- Experience/sensitivity in cultural needs and dealing with bereaved relatives.
- Good level of IT knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office.
- Experience of team working.
- Experience in a mortuary or laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of human anatomy & physiology and HTA codes of practice.
- Experience within Coroner, Funeral Director or Police services.
Skills
- Good oral and written communication skills, telephone technique, client/customer liaison.
- Ability to complete in‑house training and study for a Level 3 Diploma while working.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Able to follow instructions without deviation.

- Show respect and clarity when communicating work matters to colleagues.
- Physically fit – able to lift, carry and manoeuvre sometimes heavy loads.
