Craftsperson – Fitting (Projects)

Job Summary

Reliable and safety‑focused Craftsperson (Fitters) role with National Grid Electricity Distribution, based in Bodmin, Pool, or Plymouth. Working on the 132kV, 33kV and 11kV distribution network, maintaining and repairing substation components to keep the network safe, reliable and resilient.

Responsibilities

• Install plant and protection systems on the 132kV, 33kV & 11kV distribution network, including mechanical/electrical fitting and small wiring such as relay panels and telecontrol works.
• Develop and implement procedures and ensure health & safety requirements are fully met.
• Complete all allocated tasks safely and in a timely manner, and continuously learn and develop knowledge.
• Undertake operational duties, including receipt and management of safety documentation for substation work up to 132kV.
• Standby duties on a rota as part of the appointment.

Qualifications and Experience

• Practical experience on high‑voltage substation sites, ideally with electrical, mechanical fitting or wiring skills.
• Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 qualification or willingness to obtain it with support.
• Valid UK driving licence and mobility across the South West licence area.
• Commitment to achieving switching authorisation at 132kV and 33kV through full training.
• Ability to work confidently both independently and within a small team, make effective decisions under pressure, and maintain a flexible approach.
• Knowledge of safety requirements for work at height, manual handling, use of tools and oil, and maximum equipment safety load of 135 kg.
• Successful completion of a satisfactory DBS (Barring Service) check and, where required, a tri‑annual check.
• Legal right to work in the UK without sponsorship.
