Job Purpose


The Community Engagement Officer (Community Engagement, Education & Prevention) supports the development and delivery of community engagement activity, wellbeing education, prevention programmes, psychoeducation and targeted communications that support students throughout the academic lifecycle.


The postholder will work with the wider Community Engagement, Education & Prevention team to design impactful initiatives which support student wellbeing while studying, shape student engagement, enhance the student experience and contribute to the University’s preventative wellbeing agenda. This includes targeted messaging relating to health, personal relationships, accommodation, finance, disability provision, and emotional wellbeing, ensuring targeted message for underrepresented groups.


Working collaboratively across student groups, academic and professional services teams, including Residence Life, the postholder delivers targeted campaigns, workshops, digital content, and engagement activities that support positive wellbeing, promote positive behaviours, encourage community building and encourage early help seeking. The role includes responsibility for the development of targeted content and the evaluation of programme impact, identifying emerging trends, and contributing to service development to enhance the student experience.


Note, this role is likely to require a degree of flexibility in relation to working patterns, including evenings, due to the need for attendance at student events.


Main Duties and Responsibilities



  1. Lead the design and delivery of proactive wellbeing and community‑building initiatives, using data, insight, and professional judgement to support positive student wellbeing across the academic lifecycle

  2. Develop, plan, and deliver evidence‑informed campaigns, workshops, and digital content, ensuring materials are inclusive, accessible, and aligned with institutional priorities and sector best practice.

  3. Oversee the delivery of high‑quality engagement events and activities that strengthen student connection, belonging, and the wider non‑academic experience.

  4. Coordinate and deliver themed campaigns relating to community building, health promotion, harm reduction, wellbeing education and student resilience, peer‑to‑peer activities, and targeted outreach for underrepresented or hard‑to‑reach student groups.

  5. Create and maintain high‑quality resources, toolkits, guidance materials, and digital asset s, ensuring they remain current, relevant, and aligned with lifecycle needs and institutional standards.

  6. Build and sustain effective partnership s with student groups, academic Schools, professional services, and external organisations to enhance the reach, impact, and coherence of community engagement activity.

  7. Work proactively within a multidisciplinary team, sharing insight and contributing to service development, continuous improvement, and collaborative problem‑solving across teams.

  8. Support and contribute to training and capacity‑building for staff and student leaders, equipping them to deliver community‑building, wellbeing education, and prevention‑focused activities confidently and effectively.

  9. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required to support the effective operation of the Community Engagement, Education & Prevention function, contributing flexibly to cross team priorities and institutional initiatives.


Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience


Knowledge / Qualifications


Essential:



  • A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills through personal development and progression in a similar role(s). Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

  • A2 Knowledge of community engagement, wellbeing education and prevention approaches relevant to higher education.

  • A3 An understanding of the student experience and wellbeing landscape in higher education and the principles of developing student communities across diverse and multicultural contexts.

  • A4 Cultural awareness and understanding of how student needs differ across diverse student groups, with the ability to adapt approaches accordingly.

  • A5 Knowledge of legislation and its implications for student support and professional management in relation to mental health

  • A6 Knowledge of the Equality Act (2010) as it applies to Higher Education.

  • A7 Proven knowledge of developing structured, solutions‑focused psychoeducational materials and resources tailored to the specific needs of a diverse student population.

  • C1 Excellent interpersonal skills, including influencing skills and the ability to tailor communication to different audiences.

  • C2 High standard of written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce engaging content across multiple formats (digital, workshop, campaign materials).

  • C3 Ability to work flexibly and independently while contributing effectively to team priorities.

  • C4 Excellent IT and presentation skills, including confidence using digital platforms for engagement and education.

  • C5 Ability to prioritise work effectively, balancing multiple projects and deadlines.

  • C6 Ability to work under pressure and respond to emerging issues in a solutions focused manner.

  • C7 Excellent organisational and project management skills, with the ability to coordinate programmes and events.

  • C8 Strong empathy and effective listening skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse student groups.

  • C9 Ability to analyse data, identify trends, and translate insights into practical recommendations for service improvement.


Experience


Essential:



  • E1 Experience of community engagement, wellbeing‑promotion, or preventative programmes within a large or complex organisation.

  • E2 Experience of running campaigns or events for diverse communities or groups.

  • E3 Experience developing, delivering, and evaluating events, workshops, campaigns, and digital content.

  • E4 Demonstrable track record of delivering excellent customer experience and building positive relationships with stakeholders.


Terms and Conditions


Salary will be Grade 6, £33,951 – £37,694 per annum.


This post is full time and open ended.
