Salary & Benefits
Starting Salary: £28,187 per annum, increasing to £29,271 after 12 months and to £33,337 after 3 years. Full progression and PCO apprenticeship can bring salary to £33,337 within 12–18 months.

Responsibilities
Day to day tasks include:
- Supervising prisoners in all aspects of prison wing activity.
- Overseeing work and education programmes and encouraging participation.
- Managing operational matters such as prisoner headcounts, cell searches, security, and administrative processes.
- Managing prisoners at risk of self‑harm.
The role operates 24/7 covering days, evenings, weekends, nights, and bank holidays.
Training & Assessment
Recruitment includes an online assessment, interview, role play, written exercise, competency interview, mathematics assessment, and a fitness test covering:
- Bleep Test to reach level 5.4 in 3 min 40 s.
- Agility Test.
- Shield Hold Test.
- Grip Test 28 kg.
Successful candidates attend a 10‑week Initial Training Course (ITC) at the prison, consisting of 8 weeks of classroom training and 2 weeks of shadowing, culminating in a Diploma in Custodial Care, First Aid, and Control & Restraint training.
Eligibility & Right to Work
This role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Applicants must have a valid right to work in the UK via other routes. Minimum criteria include:
- At least two years remaining on current visa.
- Lived in the UK for at least one year.
Applicants must obtain Ministry of Justice Enhanced Level 2 Clearance and Enhanced DBS with adult and child barring vetting clearances.
Location & Commute
Based at HMP Ashfield, Shortwood Road, Pucklechurch, Bristol, BS16 9QJ. Applicants are advised to live within a 30‑mile radius.
