Job overview
We are looking to increase our Ophthalmic Technical Healthcare Assistant workforce in the Ophthalmology department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, quick to learn new skills and able to work in a busy environment.
Main duties of the job
- Drop and ointment installation (specific drugs only)
- Caring for a patient with a visual impairment
- Taking patients medical histories for assessment prior to eye medication instillation
- Educate patients and carers in lid hygiene
- Assisting in intravitreal injection clinics and minor operations
- Assisting in Medical retina clinics with basic history taking
- Assessment of pupil reaction
- Performing intraocular pressure measurement with tonopen/ICare/ORA
- Performing central corneal thickness measurement with pachymeter

Person specification
Education, Qualifications
- Good basic education
- NVQ Level 1 or 2
- Experience within an ophthalmology setting
- Basic use of Microsoft Word
- Desirable: basic knowledge of the anatomy of the eye, eye conditions and their treatment, and imaging procedures involved in the role
Experience
- Evidence of working in a busy environment
- Experience in a customer‑focused environment
- Understanding of HCA duties: patient care and housekeeping duties
- Previous experience in a health care setting
- Understanding of the nature of HCA duties
Skills, Abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with multidisciplinary team, patients and carers in written and spoken English
- Demonstrates a courteous manner with all individuals (patients, relatives, staff, etc.)
- Manually dextrous to examine with speed, precision and minimal discomfort, and to record results accurately
- Ability to write clearly and legibly in English
- Able to take messages and pass them on appropriately; understands confidentiality and standards of conduct and care
- Ability to use a computer
