Salary: £32,782 – £34,241 – based on base £27,319 with progression to £28,778 per annum. Includes an additional 20% shift allowance.

Shifts

Our teams work from 07:00-19:00 on day shift (E) and 19:00-07:00 night shift (N). The shift pattern follows a 4‑week cycle:

  • Week 1: Mon E, Tue E, Wed O, Thu O, Fri N, Sat N, Sun N.
  • Week 2: Mon O, Tue O, Wed E, Thu E, Fri O, Sat O, Sun O.
  • Week 3: Mon N, Tue N, Wed O, Thu O, Fri E, Sat E, Sun E.
  • Week 4: Mon O, Tue O, Wed N, Thu N, Fri O, Sat O, Sun O.

The Role

Our security team patrols and monitors the 50‑acre campus and 100+ buildings across Newcastle city centre, supporting students, colleagues and visitors. We provide CCTV patrols, reception, parking control, security monitoring, surveillance, recording, and reporting to protect the University Community 24/7.

We fund your SIA licence and pay a 20% shift allowance.

We Are Looking For People Who

  • Monitor CCTV systems proactively, acting as the first point of response by identifying incidents and escalating them calmly and professionally.
  • Liaise with security teams, emergency services, and campus stakeholders to report, log, and manage cases efficiently.
  • Provide clear, customer‑focused communication during incidents and routine interactions.
  • Support a diverse student population, ensuring safety and reassurance for individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.

Key Accountabilities

  • Operate and monitor all systems within the Security Control Centre efficiently, ensuring GDPR compliance and adherence to the University CCTV Code of Practice & Operating Instructions.
  • Liaise with the Police, other agencies and staff to ensure appropriate system use.
  • Record all events and actions in a clear, legible, accurate format.
  • Provide an efficient and courteous radio and telephone service, handling all enquiries professionally.
  • Report equipment failures to the Duty Team Leader/Supervisor to optimise system operation.
  • Support the Head of Security and supervisory team by monitoring the maintenance programme.
  • Maintain health and safety awareness, including annual Performance Development Reviews.
  • Assist in future development of the control centre.
  • Manage recorded data, including preview, image retrieval, archiving and production of digital images for authorised agencies.
  • Attend court to give evidence when required.
  • Assist in providing an emergency response service via radio and telephone networks.
  • Operate according to the Department’s core values, mission statement, and codes of behaviour.
  • Perform any other duties reasonably required for the post.

The Person

We are looking for a candidate who demonstrates:

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience in a Control Room environment overseeing an operational CCTV system.
  • Working knowledge of legislation relevant to security, including GDPR, Equality and Diversity, Human Rights Act, H&S and powers of arrest.
  • Good basic education, particularly in oral and written English.
  • Strong IT skills, especially data entry and retrieval, email, and Microsoft Office.
  • Previous experience in a customer‑focused environment, often as the first point of contact.

Qualifications

  • Hold a current Public Surveillance licence or be prepared to acquire one within six months after probation.
