Principal Engineer – GPU Driver & System Software | Cambridge, UK
A world‑renowned Semiconductor Giant is looking for a Principal Engineer – GPU Driver & System Software to join their team in Cambourne, Cambridge.
This is a full‑stack GPU software opportunity offering end‑to‑end exposure across the entire graphics stack—from low‑level kernel drivers and firmware to high‑level APIs and architecture co‑design. You will collaborate directly with Architecture, Compiler, and Modeling teams to unlock maximum performance from advanced silicon.
Key Responsibilities:
- Architect, develop, and optimize features across major graphics and compute APIs (Vulkan, DirectX 12, OpenGL ES, OpenCL).
- Work deep within kernel‑mode drivers and GPU firmware to optimize scheduling, memory management, and hardware control.
- Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks across driver overhead, compute throughput, and power/performance trade‑offs.
- Collaborate directly with hardware architects to ensure upcoming GPU designs are built to maximize software efficiency.
- Provide technical leadership, guide design decisions, and mentor engineers across the software group.
What We Are Looking For:
- 8+ years of experience developing GPU drivers, graphics systems, or low‑level systems software.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronic/Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- High fluency in C/C++ with strong experience working close to hardware.
- Deep knowledge of industry‑standard APIs (Vulkan, DirectX 12, OpenCL, or OpenGL ES).
- Strong understanding of GPU internals, including memory hierarchies, command submission, and pipeline architecture.
- Background in GPU performance profiling, firmware, virtualization, or compiler interaction.
- Familiarity with mapping ML/AI workloads onto GPU architectures.
