Senior Project Manager

Galliford Try is looking for a Senior Project Manager to join our team in the Cardiff area. The role involves managing and delivering complex construction projects across multiple sites while ensuring safety, quality and budget performance.
What you will be doing
- Ensure the site is organised and maintained to high standards.
- Understand your role within the construction team and ensure expectations are met.
- Assist and lead various disciplines within construction processes.
- Communicate with the construction team and guide junior members where necessary.
- Take directions from line managers, and challenge them when appropriate.
- Direct required labour, plant, staff and equipment to achieve project completion on time, to specification and within budget.
- Train and develop junior team members to meet current and future requirements.
- Coordinate the Buying team and Surveying department to order correct materials and services on time.
- Ensure compliance with Group Safety Policy and Health and Safety Regulations.
- Manage site teams, monitor performance against contract targets and apply corrective actions.
- Ensure staff training and development plans are met through annual appraisals.
- Achieve maximum marks on the twice‑monthly Health and Safety audit.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end‑to‑end delivery of projects within prison and secure estate environments.
- Develop and manage project plans, programmes, budgets, and risk registers.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and external suppliers.
- Build strong relationships with prison governors, custodial staff, government representatives, and client stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with security protocols, health and safety legislation, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage project governance, reporting, and performance against key milestones.
- Identify and mitigate project risks while maintaining operational continuity.
- Monitor budgets, control costs, and manage change effectively.
- Ensure projects meet quality standards and client expectations.
- Support business development by identifying opportunities for service improvement and future work.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a Senior Project Manager delivering complex projects.
- Previous experience working within prisons, custodial environments, or the secure estate (essential).
- Strong knowledge of project management methodologies.
- Experience managing project budgets, programmes, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance.
- Strong problem‑solving, negotiation, and decision‑making abilities.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel where required.
Desirable
- Experience delivering construction, refurbishment, FM, MEP, or infrastructure projects within custodial settings.
- Knowledge of public sector procurement and government frameworks.
- Relevant professional membership (APM, PMI, CIOB, or equivalent).
About You
Applicants must have significant experience working on design and build projects, including main contracting, health & safety management, and design and procurement processes. Experience managing all aspects of the build process and coordinating packages from design and procurement through to installation and handover is required. We welcome applicants with experience on Education and/or MOJ projects.
