My client is a rapidly growing eCommerce business investing heavily in its technology platform and engineering capability. They’re looking for a Lead Software Engineer to remain hands‑on whilst taking ownership of technical direction and mentoring a small team of engineers.
You’ll still be solving complex technical problems, designing architecture and writing production code. The difference is you’ll also help shape engineering standards, coach developers and work closely with senior technology leadership as the business continues to scale.
If you’re the engineer everyone turns to when things get difficult, but you’ve never wanted to become a full‑time manager, this could be exactly the role you’ve been looking for.
The Opportunity
You’ll become one of the senior technical voices within the engineering team, helping deliver a modern, scalable platform whilst supporting the growth of a team of four software engineers.
Working alongside senior technology leadership, you’ll influence technical decisions, improve engineering practices and help build a high‑performing engineering culture.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading a small team of Software Engineers through coaching, mentoring and technical leadership.
- Remaining hands‑on with software development and code reviews.
- Designing scalable architecture and high‑quality software solutions.
- Building and enhancing APIs, integrations and cloud‑based applications.
- Driving engineering standards, testing and CI/CD best practice.
- Collaborating with Product and wider business stakeholders to deliver new features.
- Helping recruit and develop future members of the engineering team.
- Node.js
- TypeScript
- React
- AWS
- REST APIs
- CI/CD
- Third‑party integrations
About You
You’ll probably be working today as a:
- Lead Software Engineer
- Senior Software Engineer
- Technical Lead
- Principal Engineer
- Hands‑on Engineering Manager
You’ll still enjoy writing code and want to remain technically involved whilst taking on more responsibility.
Experience within Shopify or eCommerce would be ideal, although my client would also be keen to speak with engineers from high‑volume digital platforms, retail technology or logistics environments.
You’ll enjoy mentoring engineers, influencing technical direction and helping teams deliver great software without losing what made you an engineer in the first place.
What’s On Offer
- 10% annual bonus
- Hybrid working (4 days onsite in Manchester)
- Birthday off
- Enhanced pension
- Free on‑site gym
This is an opportunity to join a business where engineering is becoming an increasingly strategic function. You’ll have genuine influence over technical direction, architecture and engineering standards whilst continuing to build software every day.
