Job Description:

Locum Consultant in the Department of Stroke Medicine – a 10 PA locum appointment for a 6‑month period. The role is based within the Regional Neuroscience Centre and is designed for a Consultant Physician with an interest in stroke medicine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant supervision and leadership to the Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Acute Stroke Units at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and to the rehabilitation unit at Chapel Allerton Hospital (C6).
  • Assess and treat patients of all ages with transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and acute stroke, working flexibly in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Co‑operate with the team delivering hyper‑acute treatments, including thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy, to ensure effective joint working and the highest quality care.
  • Contribute to education and training of staff from a variety of disciplines caring for stroke patients.
  • Actively participate in Clinical Governance, Service Improvement and Patient Safety work in stroke medicine.
  • Provide patients and carers with information and support.
  • Work collaboratively with the stroke multi‑disciplinary team to improve patient flow and facilitate decision‑making for stroke inpatients.
  • Support the IT infrastructure underpinning the stroke service and facilitate improved clinical governance and SSNAP data collection.
  • Use available resources, including the Community Stroke Team, to deliver an effective and efficient service.
  • Work with related clinical areas, including emergency department, other medical and acute surgical specialties, primary care and related clinical units.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Consultant Physician with an interest in stroke medicine.
  • Background in acute internal medicine (AIM), general internal medicine (GIM), neurology and/or geriatrics.
