Overview

We train future leaders in Emergency Medicine by inviting ED clinicians (ST4+ or equivalent) to the department.
Key Features of the Appointment
- Annualised and self‑rostered registrar rota.
- Eight hours per week of educational development time.
- Support for progression to CESR.
- Fixed‑term appointment of 12 months with potential extension.
- Contracted total hours 44.5 per week (includes an additional 4.5 hours).
- Flexible working arrangements available.
Main Duties
The post is suitable for experienced doctors in Emergency Medicine at the ST4+ level or equivalent.
- Work on the registrar rota and take responsibility for overall departmental management at night.
- Work independently in all areas of the ED – resuscitation, majors, urgent treatment centre and paediatrics.
- Review patients seen by the junior medical team and complement consultant‑delivered care.
- Manage the ER during overnight shifts with an on‑call consultant from home between midnight and 8 am.
Responsibilities
Provide high‑quality patient care, lead night shifts, perform essential emergency procedures, contribute to teaching, audit, research, quality improvement and support your colleagues. Lead the department overnight on a self‑rostered basis.
Person Specification – Knowledge & Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC and hold a current licence to practise.
- MRCEM or FRCEM.
- ALS, ATLS and/or APLS (or equivalents).
- Competence in key emergency medicine procedural skills, including procedural sedation.
- Other postgraduate diplomas and qualifications as relevant.
- ALS, ATLS and/or APLS instructor (desirable).
- Familiarity with the UK healthcare delivery system.
Experience
Minimum of five years’ experience in adult and paediatric emergency medicine (or at least two years at ST4+ level).
Skills & Abilities
- Able to independently lead an emergency department overnight with consultant on‑call off site.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Core (level 1) emergency ultrasound sign‑off.
- Experience in specialties allied to emergency medicine: paediatrics, surgery, and orthopaedics.

Salary
£67,325 to £76,582 per annum plus London weighting.
