About the role

Help shape the future of how millions of researchers discover and interact with biomedical literature by leading UX research and design across Europe PMC’s AI‑powered search initiatives. Europe PMC is a free, open‑access database of over 40million research articles, abstracts and preprints, used worldwide by researchers, systematic reviewers and developers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead user research across diverse audiences—researchers, funders, grant administrators—and translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Plan and facilitate workshops with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Design AI‑powered features such as natural language search, ensuring model outputs and limitations are communicated in a way that builds user trust, especially for audiences requiring transparency and reproducibility.
  • Translate research insights into wireframes, prototypes and interaction designs for complex, data‑heavy products.
  • Run usability testing programmes and use data to validate design decisions.

Qualifications

  • Strong research and synthesis skills with confidence presenting to non‑design audiences.
  • Proficiency in Figma (or equivalent) and experience with Figma design workflows.
  • Experience designing data‑heavy products such as dashboards, search tools or structured data interfaces.
  • Interest in designing for AI‑powered features, communicating outputs and limitations to build user trust.
  • Comfortable working embedded in cross‑functional teams alongside ML/data engineers.
  • Experience engaging senior or external stakeholders.
  • Active development of AI literacy, using AI tools for research synthesis, prototyping or usability analysis, and staying current on AI UX trends.
  • Familiarity with web analytics, basic HTML/CSS and remote testing tools.

  • Competitive salary starting at £3,861.91 per month after tax (Grade6).
