Junior Physicist, Nuclear Medicine

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join our dynamic Nuclear Medicine department in Coventry. The role will support the physics team; managing set‑up and radioactive decontamination for molecular radiotherapies, managing the contamination monitor and gamma probe QC programme, assisting and leading on radioactive waste audits and disposals, and ensuring general radiation safety compliance.
The department has recently undergone an equipment refresh, with an Omni Legend 32 digital PET scanner, a Starguide gamma camera, the Aurora SPECT CT, and the Optima SPECT CT camera. We have an on‑site Radiopharmacy with a Technetium suite and a Gallium suite for PET imaging.
We undertake SIRT, Lu‑177 DOTA, and PSMA molecular radiotherapies, as well as I‑131 ablation and thyrotoxicosis therapy. We are involved in several research projects, including Lu‑177 and Ac‑225 for mRT.
The post would suit physics graduates seeking experience prior to medical physics STP application.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
- Provide operational and scientific support to the Nuclear Medicine service.
- Undertake procedures in accordance with the quality assurance program for Nuclear Medicine equipment, taking responsibility for the safe use of complex and valuable imaging equipment. The programme has to be scheduled around equipment availability and must be regularly adapted according to clinical workload and breakdowns.
- Assist with all aspects of the department’s radiation protection commitments including contamination monitoring, radioactive decontamination and radioactive waste disposal.
- Assist with collecting and collating data relevant to the provision of a Nuclear Medicine service.
Secondment will be considered for internal candidates – if you are successful after interview, you must obtain approval from your current line manager to accept the offer.
Job responsibilities
- Presentation and distribution of scientific data and information required to comply with legislation.
- Assist with the development of the department’s procedures and protocols in accordance with relevant legislation, and produce and maintain documentation.
- Assist with undertaking and documenting risk assessments.
- Participate in teaching, training and development activities of staff and students.
- Participate in CPD sessions.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have an honours degree (first or second class) in physics.
Experience
- Experience of producing written reports containing appropriate comments and recommendations based on measurements.
- Experience working in a scientific or clinical environment dealing with non‑routine tasks.
- Experience of working in a healthcare environment.
Knowledge
- Working knowledge of uses and safety of ionising and non‑ionising radiation within Medical Physics.
- Knowledge of imaging physics to degree level or equivalent.
- Knowledge of legislation, national standards and professional guidance relevant to the duties of the post, including the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Access to enable analysis of survey data and production of reports.

- Good IT skills and knowledge of common computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages and databases.
- Ability to analyse complex information comprising laboratory or workshop data, images and clinical details. Knowledge acquired through study and experience to formulate appropriate advice and judgements.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both writing and speaking in English, to explain analytical, scientific and clinical aspects of the work to a variety of people including scientific colleagues, clinical professionals, service managers and patients and to listen to their needs.
- Make formal presentations to groups of colleagues.
- Ability to handle patient samples, hazardous reagents and chemicals in a safe manner in accordance with Health and Safety regulations.
- Ability to work within the context of Local Rules for Radiation Safety (Ionising and Non‑Ionising) requirements.
