Strategic Data Compliance Manager

We’re looking for a Strategic Data Compliance Manager to lead our organisation’s approach to data governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management. This is a senior, high‑impact role where you’ll shape how we manage data responsibly, ethically, and in line with evolving legislation.

You’ll work across the Council to embed strong data practices, influence senior stakeholders, and ensure we remain compliant with UK GDPR, DPA 2018, and other relevant frameworks. If you’re someone who can see the big picture while keeping a firm grip on the detail, this is your stage.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the organisation’s data compliance strategy, ensuring alignment with legal, regulatory, and industry standards.
• Oversee data governance frameworks, policies, and controls, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and future‑proof.
• Act as a senior advisor on data protection matters, providing expert guidance to leadership and operational teams.
• Monitor regulatory developments and proactively assess their impact on business operations.
• Manage data protection risk assessments, DPIAs, and audits, ensuring timely remediation of issues.
• Champion a culture of data responsibility through training, awareness, and stakeholder engagement.
• Collaborate with Council Services to ensure data compliance is embedded end‑to‑end.
• Lead incident response for data breaches, ensuring appropriate reporting, investigation, and mitigation.
• Maintain strong and positive relationships with the data compliance team, council services and key partners.

About You

• Deep knowledge of UK GDPR, DPA 2018, and wider data protection frameworks.
• Experience developing and implementing data governance or compliance strategies at scale.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate complex regulation into practical business action.
• Confidence influencing senior leaders and driving organisational change.
• A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset with excellent judgement.
• Collaborative, innovative, acts with integrity, is accountable, customer focused and inclusive in approach.
