We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and ambitious Senior Project Engineer to join our team on the Network Rail Eastern Region Programme (ERP) Framework. This role offers the chance to play a key part in the development and successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of rail infrastructure projects, supporting schemes from their early design stages through to detailed design and construction readiness.
As a Senior Project Engineer, you will be instrumental in shaping project outcomes during the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, ensuring that designs are developed efficiently, meet client requirements, and comply with industry standards. Collaborating closely with internal teams, designers, and Network Rail stakeholders, you will provide engineering leadership, design assurance, and technical guidance to support successful project delivery.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering development of projects throughout the ECI and design phases.
- Oversee and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering and design activities across rail infrastructure schemes.
- Manage and support the Design Manager to ensure the timely development of compliant and buildable designs.
- Provide assurance and review of designs to ensure compliance with Network Rail standards, client requirements, and industry best practice.
- Support the progression of projects through governance, approval, and assurance processes.
- Act as the primary engineering interface between the project team, designers, and client representatives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Network Rail and other key stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively with Project Managers, Planners, Quantity Surveyors, and wider delivery teams to monitor progress during the ECI phase and prepare projects for subsequent delivery stages.
- Identify engineering risks, opportunities, and constraints, ensuring these are effectively managed and communicated.
- Support the development of programme strategies that facilitate efficient project delivery and successful outcomes.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
Skills, Experience And Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Considerable experience within civil engineering, rail engineering, or major infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience working on rail infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of engineering design development and assurance processes.
- Knowledge of Network Rail standards and rail industry requirements.
- Experience managing and coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of key discipline interfaces within railway infrastructure projects.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with clients, designers, and project teams.
- Ability to influence project outcomes and drive engineering solutions from concept through to detailed design.
- Experience working within Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) environments.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional accreditation.
- Experience overseeing design management activities on complex rail projects.
- Broad construction and project delivery experience within the infrastructure sector.
