Job overview

We are looking for a qualified Mechanical Engineer to join our Building Services team. The role involves maintaining and repairing mechanical, electrical, and medical plant & equipment, managing incidents, and supporting the maintenance team.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain and repair mechanical, electrical and medical plant & equipment, and building faults.
  • Deputise for Team Leaders.
  • Act as an Authorised Person / Competent Person (Legionella, medical gas pipelines, electrical safety, ventilation).
  • Call approved contractors for maintenance breakdowns and repairs.
  • Be included on the On‑Call rota to handle emergencies outside core hours.
  • Deal with major incidents such as loss of electrical services, medical gas or heating to critical areas.
  • Motivate, train and develop the maintenance team and apprenticeship scheme.
  • Plan and prioritise work, including planned maintenance of plant and equipment.
  • Escalate calls to team leaders or contractors as necessary.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Completed and passed a 4‑year apprenticeship City & Guilds or NVQ level 3.
  • Mechanical / plumbing training for electricians or electrical training for mechanics.
  • Continuing training to latest electrical regulations.
  • Competent person – Medical Gas Authorised Person, and training for Legionella responsible person.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Significant post‑qualification experience as an Engineering Maintenance Craftsman / Electrician / Mechanical Engineer with on‑call availability.
  • Proven communication skills.
  • Multi‑skilled to handle Mechanical, Building and Electrical Maintenance.
  • Depth working knowledge of engineering systems and maintenance experience.
  • Experience working in a healthcare environment.

Skills

  • Complex fault diagnosis skills.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work.
  • Ability to operate computer‑controlled systems.
  • Evidence of ongoing development in equalities issues.
  • Use of computer‑based risk and asbestos register.
