SCHOOL CARETAKER / SITE SUPERVISOR

Job type: Non‑Teaching; Salary Scale: Scale D; Contract: Permanent; Working Weeks: 52; DBS Required: Yes; Vulnerable Group: Children; Closing Date: 9th September 2026 at 12pm.

About the Role

Following the retirement of the current caretaker, we are seeking an experienced caretaker with physical stamina, DIY skills, general maintenance knowledge, and record‑keeping abilities to support our infant and nursery school. The ideal candidate will be resilient, a team player, and committed to the well‑being of children, staff, and the local community.

Position includes staff supervisory responsibilities and limited budgetary control. A successful 6‑month probationary period applies.

Responsibilities

  • Security – carry out security procedures, opening/closing routines, prevent trespassing, respond to alarms, police, and emergencies outside normal working hours.
  • Cleaning – ensure premises and furnishings cleaned to school standards, perform scheduled and holiday‑specific cleaning, audit and order supplies, maintain log sheets.
  • Maintenance – respond to the Maintenance Reporting System, prioritise health and safety tasks, manage tools, contact contractors, inspect work, operate heating plant, execute fire/flood, snow and other emergency procedures, maintain drains, planters, and holiday projects.
  • Stock Management – receive deliveries, store appropriately, and verify orders.
  • Lettings – prepare for after‑school activities and administer lettings per procedure.
  • Health & Safety – qualify as a First Aider, comply with manual‑handling and COSHH guidelines, assist risk assessments, conduct termly checks, and maintain COSHH records.
  • Other Duties – undertake relevant CPD, be flexible to respond to weather or emergencies outside normal hours.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Good literacy and numeracy, able to complete administrative systems, stock control and order calculations.
  • Excellent communication, problem‑solving, initiative and creativity.
  • Experience operating cleaning equipment, machinery and tools.
  • Familiar with school layout and operations.
  • Capability to supervise, coordinate and support cleaning staff.
