Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service (SDGS) is a dynamic team of over 100 colleagues delivering core and specialist rare disease and oncology genomics services as part of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NEY GLH), working in partnership with Leeds and Newcastle. Since April 2024, SDGS has operated as a dedicated dry‑lab analysis and reporting department, receiving data and results from partner laboratories.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled individual to join our team.
About You
- Hold a degree (or equivalent) in a biological science or related discipline.
- Be registered, or eligible for registration, with an appropriate body (e.g., AHCS).
- Demonstrate strong genomic analytical skills, including troubleshooting.
- Communicate clearly and effectively across teams and disciplines.
- Have the ability to train, support and develop staff within your service area.

Main duties of the job
Reporting into the Operational Services Manager, some of your responsibilities will include:
- You will take responsibility for an analytical service, including analysis, report generation, and authorisation, developmental aspects and liaison with clinical scientists.
- You will demonstrate and apply a good understanding of the scientific and technical principles involved in the delivery of the service, including troubleshooting.
- You will manage and supervise colleagues within the group, including the appraisal process, objective setting and aspects of performance management.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
- Degree or equivalent, or equivalent appropriate experience in biological science (or related discipline).
- Registered or soon to be eligible for registration in appropriate scheme for Healthcare Scientist (e.g., AHCS).
Experience
- A number of years’ experience of laboratory/analytical work (post‑graduate and/or industrial).
- Experience of management of some aspects of UKAS.
- Experience of service planning, development and delivery.
Knowledge and Skills
- Broad practical and theoretical knowledge of Human Genetics with several areas of highly specialist skills and detailed knowledge.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety, quality management and UKAS requirements in a laboratory environment.
- High level of analytical skill including trouble shooting.
- Ability to train and develop staff in service area.
- Have line managed staff or managed projects.
- Drafted and written SOPs.
Personal Attributes
- Able to carry responsibility for day‑to‑day management of workload and to tight deadlines where necessary.
- Excellent team player and independent worker.
