Urenco is a global leader in the production of low carbon energy. Urenco UK (UUK) is seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the UNS Mechanical Engineering Team at Capenhurst. The role oversees delivery of high‑quality mechanical engineering solutions that ensure safe, compliant and reliable plant operations, acting as custodian of mechanical engineering arrangements and driving improvements in design, standards and procedures to optimise equipment availability and plant performance.
Responsibilities
- Health, Safety, Environment & Security: ensure all mechanical engineering work meets the highest standards of safety, regulatory compliance and security. This includes:
- Incorporating inherent safety principles in mechanical design solutions.
- Considering all operating conditions and potential failure modes (including human factors, unrevealed failures, and common‑mode failures).
- Accounting for the full range of process hazards (pressure, radiological, chemotoxic and environmental risks).
- Classifying, protecting and managing documents in accordance with security and export control requirements.
- Ensuring designs meet relevant legislation, industry standards and company arrangements.
- Team Leadership & Performance: Lead and develop the Mechanical Engineering Team, promote teamwork and ownership, and deliver mechanical engineering excellence. Foster collaboration across engineering disciplines to support safe, efficient and high‑quality outcomes.
- Technical Specialist: Serve as a subject matter expert in mechanical engineering, providing authoritative guidance on integrity, design compliance, plant modifications and technical investigations. Apply deep technical expertise to resolve complex problems and deliver robust solutions.
- Mechanical Engineering Excellence: Ensure designs are compliant and technically sound, aligned with plant requirements; provide clear implementation scope and technical direction to construction and commissioning teams; develop and improve procedures, standards and systems to drive efficiency, traceability and continuous improvement; personally develop design packages to address operational issues and opportunities for improved reliability.
What you’ll need to thrive
- Professional Engineer with extensive experience delivering mechanical design solutions on operational plants.
- Chartership desirable for this position.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a chemical, nuclear or similarly regulated industry.
- Proven experience working on a Top Tier COMAH site or nuclear licensed site.
- Broad technical understanding of mechanical equipment, technologies and engineering principles.
- Strong experience working within multi‑disciplinary engineering teams, understanding interfaces between engineering disciplines and how they contribute to project and plant outcomes.
