The Role
Our Client, Tier 1 contractor, is seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to take ownership of the commercial delivery of complex engineering projects within the aviation sector. You will play a key role in protecting the commercial interests of the business while ensuring projects are delivered successfully, profitably and in line with contractual obligations.
Working closely with Project Directors, Commercial Leads and multidisciplinary project teams, you will provide commercial leadership throughout the project lifecycle, managing both client and subcontractor contracts while driving best practice across the commercial function.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the commercial management of complex engineering projects, ensuring robust cost control, contract administration and effective change management.
- Protect the business from commercial risk through the interpretation, management and administration of contracts with both clients and subcontractors.
- Maintain full financial control of projects, including cost forecasting, cash flow management, billing plans and payment applications.
- Manage contractual change processes, including the assessment, pricing and negotiation of compensation events covering both time and cost.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors and internal stakeholders to support successful project delivery.
- Monitor commercial performance, identifying risks and opportunities while implementing strategies to maximise project profitability.
- Support the development of the commercial team by mentoring colleagues, sharing best practice and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with Project Directors and the Commercial Leadership Team to implement commercial strategies and achieve business objectives.
- Ensure commercial activities align with project programmes and support successful delivery against key milestones.
About You
You’ll be a commercially astute professional with a strong background managing high-value engineering or infrastructure projects within complex, regulated environments.
You will have:
- Previous commercial management experience on major airport or aviation infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience managing engineering or infrastructure projects with annual revenues exceeding £10 million.
- Strong knowledge of industry‑standard contracts, including NEC3, NEC4 and MF/1.
- Excellent understanding of cost control, forecasting, cash flow management and project financial reporting.
- Demonstrable experience managing contractual change, including compensation events, valuations and commercial negotiations.
- A good understanding of project planning, programme management and schedule delay analysis.
- Experience managing suppliers and subcontractors throughout both pre‑contract and post‑contract stages.
- Excellent negotiation, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong organisational abilities with the capability to prioritise multiple activities within fast‑paced project environments.
- The ability to influence multidisciplinary teams and drive commercial performance.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution such as RICS, CIOB or ACostE is desirable.
