Senior/Principal Ecologist With Specialism In Ornithology

Overview

We’re hiring nationwide, with opportunities available in our offices across Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Peterborough and Reading.

We have an exciting opportunity for a senior or principal ecologist with a special interest in ornithology to join our award‑winning ecology team across the UK.

Positions are available on a permanent full‑time, part‑time, job share or flexible basis.

Responsibilities

• Deliver challenging, diverse and innovative projects across transport, water and energy sectors for government agencies, local authorities, utilities and energy companies.
• Work in multidisciplinary teams, building rapport and trust so that ornithological requirements are recognised, acknowledged and constraints acted upon.
• Lead ornithological surveys and provide expert advice to clients, both internal and external; support other ecological surveys, assessments and project tasks as required.
• Support Environmental Impact Assessment, Habitats Regulation Appraisals and other statutory assessments using knowledge of national legislation.
• Manage a combination of desk and site‑based tasks, with willingness to travel across the UK and occasionally stay away from home during the working week.

Required Qualifications

• Background in terrestrial ecology with relevant industry experience, including technical reporting and impact assessment in accordance with national legislation and guidance.
• Strong bird identification skills and knowledge of bird ecology, with experience in generic and species‑specific survey techniques.
• Experience in scoping and executing field surveys and data analysis.
• Associate membership of a professional body (or experience to obtain membership); applicants with full membership or chartership are also welcomed.
• Inquisitive, willing to learn and a strong sense of personal responsibility.
• Ability to write clear and concise reports.

Desired Qualifications

• Current and full driving licence.
• Knowledge of another ecological specialism in addition to ornithology.
