Job Summary
We seek an individual who can demonstrate engagement with the contemporary challenges within the built environment, sustainability and energy efficiency, and who is eager to be part of a team to bring betterment and change across the industry. The successful candidate is knowledgeable of, and self‑organised in keeping abreast of, developments in regulations & standards, industry guidance, and technical developments. They are driven to understand challenges and seek design solutions, in collaboration with the internal and external design team, can think in 3D, understand implications of design coordination, constructability and CDM constraints, and maintain a professional approach and rigor while supporting others. They speak and present their knowledge, respond to feedback, and understand the commercial and contractual arrangements of engineering consultancy, company standards, and ways of working on a project‑by‑project basis.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, coordination, and management of mechanical systems for diverse building projects, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and client requirements. They will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, manage project timelines, mentor junior engineers, and serve as a key technical lead within the organisation. They will deliver the mechanical engineering consultancy process day‑to‑day by knowing and performing the company’s duties via the ACE Agreement and company standards across all stages of the RIBA Plan of Work. They will collaborate with other engineering consultancy disciplines, clients and external project teams to develop coordinated and efficient designs, represent the company on projects of various scales, and work to enhance the reputation of Introba, demonstrating continued professional development towards CEng status.
Technical Tasks
- Define and develop project briefs to deliver mechanical engineering and fire protection systems to the client’s and statutory requirements.
- Design and detail mechanical and fire engineering systems.
- Prepare detailed design drawings in sketch form suitable for presenting concepts to clients and other design professionals.
- Keep abreast of project design developments with architectural, structural and services constraints. Read and comment on Fire Safety Strategies.
- Advise other construction team professionals on their own activities related to building services.
- Illustrate concepts and prepare written reports.
- Understand and deliver net zero carbon and energy conscious designs.
- Implement programs to improve the quality of our service, products and systems to meet client requirements and expectations and minimise costs while maximising the company’s competitive position.
- Instil the concept of quality being the responsibility of every design team member, whether in the office or on vacation.
- Promote quality issues with all members and ensure that the quality control function is effectively performed.
- Understand quality assurance and control programmes in the office.
- Keep current on innovative design developments; participate in seminars and/or professional associations, attend trade shows relevant to the company’s interests.
- Prepare complete packages of tender information.
- Monitor and report on the quality and progress of work on site.
- Be conversant with relevant and up‑to‑date codes of practice and standards.
- Prepare technical review reports prior to internal review.
People
- Work within a team environment, instruct and lead mechanical design delivery teams and Revit coordinators in their work as it relates to the project, and support staff under the Senior Engineer’s control.
- Provide and manage project/team specific activities and assist in developing project action plans and design programmes.
Financial
- Manage projects to achieve client satisfaction and profitability targets.
- Understand workload forecasting as new projects are secured.
Marketing
- Identify new work opportunities with clients and other professionals.
Skills and Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering / Building Services Engineering or other relevant design & engineering degree.
- Professional Engineer (CEng or equivalent).
- Technically competent in Building Regulations, CDM, British Standards, best practices on BSRIA and CIBSE guidance.
- Desired knowledge of Healthcare Technical Memorandums, FPA/ LPC Sprinkler Rules, Heat Networks Technical Assurance Scheme (HNTAS) or capability to develop those.
- Construction process aware.
- Good communicator.
- On route to or achieved CIBSE, SoPHE or IMechE CEng status.
- Current experience with Bluebeam Review, Navisworks, Revit, Microsoft Office suites.
- Project management experience desired.
- Represent the practice at project level.
- Proven experience in leading engineering projects and teams.
