Discover Children’s Story Centre is seeking two creative practitioners for our new KS2 project working with Year 3 (7–8-year-olds) school programme,Everybody’s Got Stories: oneOral Storytellerand oneGraphic Novel/Comic Artist/Author-Illustrator. Each practitioner will work alongside Discover’s Community & Learning team and Story Builders to inspire children to develop a lifelong love of stories and reading.
About the project
Everybody’s Got Stories responds to the “Decline by Nine” which is the drop in reading for pleasure that can happen as children approach age nine. Across the year, pupils will work with a professional oral storyteller and/or a graphic novel/comic artist/author-illustrator. Across the academic year, Autumn focuses on comics and visual storytelling; Spring on oral storytelling; and in Summer, children choose a strand to develop for a final showcase for parents and carers. The programme builds confidence, ownership and enthusiasm for reading by giving children creative choice and multiple ways into storytelling.
It particularly supports children who may be less engaged with reading or face barriers to literacy, including pupils with English as an additional language. Sessions should be inclusive, adaptable and accessible to a wide range of learners. The practical, creative nature of the programme is also designed to engage boys and a broad range of interests within mixed-gender classes.
