We are looking for a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to develop, coordinate and deliver a specialist service of psychological assessment and therapy to adults with severe and/or complex mental health needs as they are discharged from hospital settings, where they are rough sleeping or in unstable accommodation. You will be working with people who may have faced exclusions and inequality throughout, who may have difficulty in trusting professionals and services and who may have experienced severe trauma – developing associated coping mechanisms that can make them ‘hard to engage with’.
The Oxfordshire Health and Homelessness Inclusion Team (OHHI) is an integrated partnership operating across housing, health, care and third sector systems. We work with clients who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, and are unable to access mainstream health and social care services, usually due to complications arising from their homelessness.
The purpose of this post is to ensure the systematic provision of a high quality highly specialist psychological service to adults with severe and/or complex mental health disorders served by the Oxfordshire Out of Hospital Care Team and Homelessness Service.
This vacancy is for a full time, fixed-term 12-month maternity cover.
Main duties of the job
Taking a creative and client-centred approach, the team’s purpose is to:
- Prevent hospital discharges to street and associated readmissions;
- Avoid hospital attendance and admissions (where health, care and support needs can be better met in the community);
- Improve access to mainstream services and reduce health, housing and care inequalities for people with multiple and complex needs;
- Support an improvement in an individual’s health and wellbeing; and
- Prevent rough sleeping and homelessness.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Within this post, we will provide excellent clinical and professional supervision by senior psychologists and are ready to discuss CPD opportunities appropriate to this fixed term role to help you consolidate your therapy and leadership skills in a focused and supported way.
Key duties of this post include:
- Providing specialist psychological assessments of clients based on the appropriate use of tests, self-report measures, observations and interviews with support networks.
- Planning and implementing a range of formal, informal and creative psychological interventions and treatments, employing methods of proven efficacy and drawing upon different explanatory models whilst maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
- Undertaking risk assessments for individual clients and to provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk
- Providing advice and consultation on an individual’s psychological care to non-clinical colleagues, and to role-model and foster trauma-informed services and psychologically informed environments through reflective practice and joint case working.
- Leading on service development associated with psychological support within the homelessness pathway
- Holding supervisory and line management responsibility for a Band 7/8a Psychologist, any other junior psychology staff recruited, as well as to other members of the MDT

Essential criteria
- HCPC registration
- Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstratable post qualification experience
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
- Substantial experience of working as a qualified clinical or counselling psychologist with post-qualification experience working at a Highly Specialist level.
