Locum Consultant in Restorative Dentistry

The post is an NHS funded role at the Bristol Dental Hospital, part‑time 9 position holders to cover a maternity leave until May 2027. The appointee will be welcomed within an integrated and collegiate Restorative Dentistry services team.

There is no on‑call commitment. The post holder will be expected to provide clinical leadership, dental advice and treatment within the specialty of Restorative Dentistry and for patients requiring oral and dental rehabilitation as part of developmental disorders including cleft lip and palate, hypodontia, head and neck cancer, major trauma and periodontology. An interest in trauma, endodontics and dental implant surgery would also be an advantage.

Job responsibilities

Provide clinical leadership and treatment in Restorative Dentistry, including management of patients with developmental disorders, trauma, endodontics, implant surgery and periodontology.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

  • Fully registered with the GDC
  • Certificate of completion of specialist training (CCT) or equivalent, or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the interview
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (or equivalent)
  • On the GDC Specialist Register for Restorative Dentistry (Perio, Endo or Pros considered for the inaugural appointment)
  • Candidates within 6 months of gaining CCT (not applicable to CESR)
  • Higher academic qualification e.g., MD, PhD or equivalent

Experience

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Restorative Dentistry (or Endo, Perio, Pros)
  • Ability to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
  • Special interest and expertise that complements other consultants and aligns with the Trust’s service strategy

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

  • Up‑to‑date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
  • Broad range of IT skills

Clinical Governance and Audit

  • Understanding of clinical governance and individual responsibilities
  • Knowledge of principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
  • Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) schemes and relevant evidence of participation
  • Positive approach to evidence‑based practice

Research

  • Evidence of involvement in research
  • Knowledge of principles involved in research
  • Evidence of peer‑review research papers
  • Ability to increase the academic profile of the department

Teaching & Training

  • Experience of teaching medical students
  • Experience of supervising trainees
  • Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team
  • Formal teaching qualification
