Job Title: Residential Support Worker (Complex Care / Supported Living)
Location: West Midlands
Reporting to: Registered Manager / Team Leader
Job Purpose
To provide high-quality, person-centred support to individuals with learning disabilities, complex needs, mental health conditions, and behaviours that challenge. The role focuses on promoting independence, dignity, safety, and overall wellbeing within a supported living environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Person-Centred Support
- Support individuals in line with their care plans, risk assessments, and positive behaviour support (PBS) plans
- Encourage independence in daily living tasks (e.g. cooking, cleaning, personal care)
- Promote choice, control, and inclusion in decision-making
2. Managing Challenging Behaviour
- Support individuals who display behaviours that challenge using de-escalation techniques
- Follow behaviour support strategies and interventions safely and consistently
- Record and report incidents accurately
3. Mental Health Support
- Monitor and support individuals with mental health needs
- Recognise early signs of deterioration and report concerns
- Support emotional wellbeing and engagement in meaningful activities
4. Personal Care
- Provide support with personal hygiene, dressing, toileting, and medication where required
- Maintain dignity and respect at all times
5. Safeguarding & Safety
- Safeguard vulnerable adults and follow safeguarding procedures
- Ensure a safe living environment, including health & safety compliance
- Administer medication in line with policy (if trained)
6. Documentation & Communication
- Maintain accurate daily records, incident reports, and care documentation
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, families, and external professionals
- Attend handovers, team meetings, and training sessions
7. Community & Social Inclusion
- Support individuals to access the community, education, or employment
- Encourage participation in social and recreational activities
Key Skills & Experience
- Experience working with:
- Learning disabilities (LD)
- Challenging behaviour
- Mental health conditions
- Understanding of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm under pressure
- Basic IT skills for record-keeping
Qualifications (Desirable but not always essential)
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care
- CPI / PMVA / MAPA training (or willingness to complete)
- Medication training
