The Vacancy Owing to an increased workload including successful framework awards, RSK Geosciences have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join RSK Geosciences in Scotland (Glasgow/Edinburgh). Working alongside an experienced team based UK-wide, you will get involved with a wide variety of geotechnical and geo-environmental projects in sectors including energy infrastructure, renewables and development/ regeneration projects. Key clients include Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN), Scottish Power Renewables, Tier 1 contractors and local authorities.
We have been involved in several high profile and award-winning projects, which have been recognised at the Environment Analyst Brownfield Awards. In addition, several of our staff have been shortlisted for prestigious awards including the Ground Engineering Rising Star Awards and Environment Analyst Technical Lead and Best Early Career Professional, and the RSK Geosciences training programme has won the 2024 Ground Engineering Award for Excellence in Learning and Development.
What You Can Expect In This Position
As a senior member of the team you will be expected to lead or assist in the delivery of geotechnical projects and will therefore be able to demonstrate strong technical, commercial and project management capabilities. It is expected that employees working at this grade will have a keen project finance awareness, be client facing, self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach, and work well within a team environment.
Our current team works out of offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Hybrid working will also be considered.
Based on our current workload and client base there are ample opportunities to develop within this role and to assist in managing our growing team.
What you’ll be doing
- Project manage a variety of ground investigation projects as Principal Contractor and Contractor in accordance with existing framework contracts
- Design, plan and manage geotechnical/geo-environmental investigation projects including the production or technical review of high-quality GI specifications, factual and interpretive reports
- Work with technical and projects leads to deliver and report on appropriate solutions on geotechnical matters including slopes, earthworks, foundations, basements and retaining structures
- Prepare and technically review technical notes, drawings and geotechnical reports and share knowledge through preparing and delivering seminars and training
- Communicate with colleagues, clients (both external and within the wider RSK Group) and stakeholders to build strong working relationships with the aim of exceeding client expectations, encouraging repeat business and contributing to a strong team ethic
- Support business development through managing the preparation of tenders in line with existing frameworks and RSK templates
- Occasional UK travel to other RSK Geoscience offices as necessary
- Stewardship of health, safety and environment in accordance with company standards and contribute to sustainability goals
- Coaching and mentoring others within the geosciences team in geotechnical and project management matters
What we’re looking for
- Experienced geotechnical engineer with at least ten years of working in a geotechnical/engineering consultancy environment
- Strong technical, commercial and project management capabilities
- Practical experience in design, supervision and management of geotechnical site investigations
- A thorough understanding of geology, ground investigation works, engineering geology and geotechnical engineering
- Demonstrable experience of geotechnical interpretive reporting and problem solving
- Excellent understanding of current geotechnical industry guidance and standards, and strong soil (and ideally rock) logging capabilities
- Understanding and demonstrable experience in the use of various geotechnical software packages to assess piles, settlement, slope stability and retaining walls, e.g. Oasys Geotechnical Software suite, would be beneficial
- Proven experience of preparing tenders and fee proposals
- Proactive and a self-starter, able to work independently and within teams face to face and remotely
- Client driven with the ability to motivate and engage with immediate colleagues and those across the wider RSK business
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing
- Ability to multi-task, plan and prioritise workload
- Computer literate and skilled with Microsoft Office applications, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience of using Microsoft Project also valuable.
- Full UK driving licence
Qualifications/ Certification
- BEng or BSc or equivalent in Civil, Geology or Geotechnical Engineering or similar is essential
- Further degree in Soil/Rock Mechanics, Engineering Geology, Geotechnics or equivalent is preferable but not essential
- Chartered Engineer/Geologist with a relevant professional body (e.g. CGeol, CEng, RoGEP)
