Senior Project Management professional to work within our Intelligent Infrastructure business, strengthening and increasing capacity within our project management community.

Our Project Managers support our clients to achieve successful project delivery, leading projects integrated with the client team, and as outsourced consultancy teams. We work on a huge range of projects, from medium scale renewal contracts for highway authorities to complex transformational programmes to support digital, data and technology strategies.

We deliver solutions to maximise road safety on all road types, delivering operational systems and services into control centres to reduce congestion and improve road user satisfaction, and innovative projects as transport moves into a world of electric vehicles, greater connectivity, and increased automation being trialled in testbeds across the UK and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking ownership for the successful delivery of projects/programmes, giving leadership and direction to the team, effectively communicating with all parties, identifying and managing risks, planning and progress monitoring, development and implementation of appropriate project controls.
  • Building strong and effective relationships with our clients through active engagement to understand their needs, operating as a trusted advisor to help achieve their objectives.
  • Working with and managing other WSP teams in the multidisciplinary project/programme environment.
  • Working with and managing supply chain suppliers, including both sub-consultants & contractors, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Optimising the resource balance across the project/programme, ensuring all deliverables and milestones are achieved on time and to the right quality.
  • Monitoring and reporting finances and reporting both within the business and to the client in a clear and productive manner.
  • Working with a range of stakeholders internal and external to identify solutions, share best practice and drive best outcomes for your projects and others across the programme.
  • Acting as a role model and mentor for other project management staff within the wider business, while also actively contributing to the development and knowledge sharing within our Portfolio, Programme, and Project Management (P3M) community of practice.
  • Championing excellent health and safety practice and leading project management commissions to achieve safe, sustainable and efficient outcomes that meet agreed objectives.

Development Path

  • Formal APM training programmes from foundation level to Chartership.
  • In‑house Project Leadership Group for sharing best practice and learning lessons with peers.
  • Mentoring and coaching to support early project‑management career professionals.
  • Business Management System (ISO‑9001, ISO‑14001, ISO‑44001, ISO‑45001) providing tools and processes aligned to APM to support the full project‐management lifecycle.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate

  • Proven experience of project management at practitioner level across multiple projects simultaneously with complex reporting structures.
  • Proven experience in managing both project delivery and commercial performance, ensuring projects are completed on time, within scope, and on budget while optimising financial outcomes and driving value for the business.
  • Experience leading or working as part of a high‑performing team, with the ability to influence and motivate others with different levels of experience and skills.
  • Experience working as a client, consultant or contractor, in public and/or private sector environments delivering complex projects/programmes.
  • Understanding and practical experience of delivering projects/programmes within a structured project control process.
  • Relevant project‑management qualification e.g. APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ).
  • Robust project‑management skills with a track record for successful delivery, ideally within transport, public sector, or high‑risk environments, and capability in managing proposals and bids.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage complex matrix environments, coordinating and collaborating with multiple subject‑matter experts across functions to ensure alignment.
  • Excellent relationship‑management skills with proven experience building rapport and trust with colleagues, clients and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; ability to influence, engender commitment and engage people.
  • Ability to challenge and constructively probe and offer alternative perspectives, and to present ideas effectively.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within real and virtual environments, sharing information and engaging people to make decisions effectively and timely.
  • Work with clients to help them with their challenges (client‑driven/cross‑selling) to deliver services in a better environment.
