Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust is inviting applications for a sub‑specialty trainee in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (Emergency Medicine ST4‑6) based in the busy Emergency Department at the Queen’s Medical Centre campus. The post commences in August 2026 for a 12‑month period.

Training rotations

During the year, you will rotate for 6 months in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, 3 months in PICU and 3 months in General Paediatrics. The post is approved for sub‑specialty training in paediatric emergency medicine.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Take senior clinical roles within CYPED, seeing and reviewing children and young people (CYP) with serious illness and injury, including leading trauma teams.
  • Maintain current knowledge and practice; attend clinical meetings and participate in audit and service training of other professionals.
  • Undertake a clinically relevant audit project under a Consultant and present it at monthly audit meetings.
  • Deliver formal and informal training to the multi‑disciplinary team.

Education and training support

  • Allocated a PEM Consultant supervisor for the year.
  • Supported to attend one full day per month of local teaching; part of the regional Emergency Department teaching programme.
  • Expected to participate in local postgraduate programmes, including audit, counselling sessions and professional review; study leave arranged with the appropriate tutor.

Eligibility and qualifications

  • Full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment and a current licence to practice.
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation Programme competencies from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent.
  • Evidence of achievement of CT1, CT2 & CT3 ACCS EM competencies at Core Trainee level supported by evidence from workplace‑based assessment of clinical performance (DOPS, Mini‑CEX, CbD, ACAT) and multisource feedback or equivalent, ARCP or equivalent.

Additional information

The role offers opportunities to be involved in innovative projects around the use of novel IT solutions and app development, and to engage in research linked with the University of Nottingham and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine. You must fulfil the essential criteria set out by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine to be eligible for sub‑specialty recognition.
