Role: Surface Mount machine Operator / SMT Technician
Location: Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire
Salary: Competitive
Training: Full development available, if you have SMT line experience and basic maintenance capability, we can train you into a Process Technician / Process Engineer pathway.
Overview
We’re looking for an experienced SMT Operator or Technician who wants to take the next step in their career. You’ll support the setup, operation, programming, and optimisation of SMT and Selective Soldering processes, working closely with Engineering, Production, and Quality teams to ensure high‑quality PCB assembly.
This role suits someone who has been running SMT lines for 3–5 years and is ready to progress into a more technical, engineering‑focused position — or someone already experienced in machine programming, NPI, and process improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
SMT & Selective Soldering Operations
- Set up and operate SMT equipment including screen printers, pick‑and‑place machines, reflow ovens, and selective soldering systems.
- Load and replenish component reels, trays, and feeders.
- Carry out routine product changeovers and support efficient line flow.
- Provide technical support to production teams during builds.
New Product Introduction (NPI)
- Create printer, reflow, and soldering profiles for new products.
- Program screen printers and placement machines using NPI software.
- Prepare first‑off builds and coordinate FAI with the Quality team.
- Monitor early builds, adjust processes, and resolve issues to ensure stable, high‑quality output.
- Update manufacturing documentation and NPI build reports.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform preventative maintenance on SMT and Selective Soldering equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve process issues such as poor print, misalignment, tombstoning, bridging, insufficient solder, barrel‑fill issues, etc.
- Debug AOI programs to reduce false fails and improve throughput.
- Review machine efficiency and optimise build sequences to improve cycle time and output.
- Support Engineering and external contractors with complex repairs.
Quality Control
- Work with the Quality team to investigate AOI defects and implement corrective actions.
- Operate and interpret AOI inspection systems.
- Use SPC data to identify trends and drive process improvements.
- Maintain compliance with IPC‑A‑610 and internal quality standards.
Material Handling & CoSHH
- Correctly handle and store MSD, ESD‑sensitive, and other electronic components.
- Work in line with CoSHH requirements for chemicals and soldering materials.
- Monitor scrap and attrition rates, adjusting processes to reduce waste.
Essential Skills & Experience
- 2–3+ years’ experience operating or maintaining SMT pick‑and‑place and/or Selective Soldering equipment.
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting ability.
- Ability to read assembly drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with component packages (0402, QFN, BGA, etc.).
- Confident computer skills; experience with Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of SMT processes including solder paste application, placement, reflow, selective soldering, and inspection criteria.
- Knowledge of ESD controls and general H&S requirements.
- IPC‑A‑610 certification (preferred).
Education
- GCSEs in Maths, English, and Science (required).
- Technical certifications or an electronics‑related qualification (advantageous).
- IPC‑A‑610 / IPC‑7711/7721 (preferred).
Desirable Attributes
- Detail‑oriented with strong ownership of quality.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
- Strong communication skills.
- Flexible to support production demands when required.
- Good manual dexterity and visual acuity for fine‑pitch inspection.
- Experience in SMT/PTH rework and hand soldering.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
