Decontamination Team Leader

Department: HSDU

Band 4 £28,392 – £31,157 per annum

Hours: Full Time 37.5 hours per week, Permanent

Shift patterns: Early shift 8am – 4pm, Late shift 11am – 7pm (includes 1 Saturday in 4 and weekend on‑call rota).

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise technicians and manage decontamination operations for reusable surgical equipment and medical devices.
  • Provide a high‑quality and timely service to theatres, wards, and departments within the hospital.
  • Manage decontamination records and ensure adherence to department SOPs and Quality Management Systems.
  • Plan workload independently and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance: routine testing, Planned Preventative Maintenance schedules, and participation in quality group meetings.
  • Participate in audits, data analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate with users and staff, providing support and training to new and less experienced staff.
  • Monitor stocks of raw materials and assist in evaluating new products.
  • Respond to major incidents and participate in emergency protocol training.
  • Flexibly undertake other duties such as project work, internal job rotation, and absence cover as required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Recent HSDU experience and familiarity with the operational aspects of a Quality Management System.
  • Holding an e‑learning qualification in decontamination and completion of the introduction certificate in team leading.
  • Strong knowledge of decontamination processes (disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, assembly, sterilisation, dispatch and tracking).
  • Experience with routine testing of decontamination equipment and troubleshooting.
  • Experience in managing workloads and supervising a team.
  • Ability to work within limits of competence, prioritise workload, and minimise quality risks.
