Job Description:

The Local Government Association (LGA) is undergoing an ambitious transformation programme to ensure we remain a strong, effective and sustainable voice for local government. The Public Health Peer Review and External Support is a major new local authority public health improvement programme, funded by the Department for Health and Social Care. Over the next three years, the LGA will work with councils in England, starting in June 2026, to support local public health teams to deliver better health outcomes for their communities.

Role Overview

Research & Data Analyst (Public Health) – This role supports the Programme Lead (Public Health) and the Public Health Programme Board to develop and implement a national programme of public health improvement support. It includes undertaking high‑quality analysis, intelligence and research to inform, challenge and foster innovative use of data, insights and research in support of programme delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the national public health improvement programme.
  • Undertake high‑quality analysis, intelligence and research to inform and challenge programme delivery.
  • Work closely with councils, including Directors of Public Health and Public Health Teams, to co‑develop and deliver improvement support to the highest standard.
  • Provide high‑quality content, advice and tools in collaboration with the LGA Research & Data Teams and Public Health Policy.
  • Support immediate delivery needs and collaborate with the broader Programme Team.

Qualifications

  • Current or recent public health experience is essential.
  • Broad understanding of how data sets, insights and information are used to inform plans, priorities and outcomes for communities.
  • Experience using a range of survey, research and data analysis platforms (e.g., Qualtrics).
  • Pragmatic approach to providing advice and working closely with the Programme Team.
  • Enthusiastic about shaping the new programme and contributing to councils’ public health responsibilities.

  • Annual leave: 29 days, rising to 31 days after three years and 33 days after five years, plus all UK public holidays (pro‑rata for fixed‑term and part‑time contracts).
