Software Engineer – Regional Expansion Payments Platform (Java)

The team you’ll be joining is the Payment Integrations Platform, whose goal is to provide a reliable and scalable platform integrating payment schemes of the world into Wise.
The platform is used by all the regional engineers and supports 100+ integrations currently, including a number of direct payment scheme integrations.
All cross-border (and more) transfers of Wise are going through this platform.
Responsibilities
- Manage integration complexity and maintain high transaction speed and scalability.
- Ensure continuous regulatory compliance.
- Raise automation level to enable scaling of the product.
- Participate in on‑call activities and harmonize complex, conflicting requirements to drive maximum usability, reliability, and performance.
- Collaborate across teams, break down complex projects into incremental milestones, and deliver customer value.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of Java and Spring Boot.
- Experience with relational databases, SQL query optimisation, and schema design.
- Strong sense of ownership and excellent communication skills to drive cross-team projects.
- Ability to work independently while being a collaborative team player.
- Ability to break down complex projects into incremental milestones that deliver customer value.
- Curiosity and a drive for continuous learning and improvement.
- Adherence to and advocacy for best coding practices, continuous delivery, and code reviews.
- A proven track record of leading technical initiatives and mentoring other engineers.
- Good discipline and skill in producing written documentation and diagrams.
Bonus Skills
- Interest in using AI assisted coding tools such as Cursor or Claude Code.
- Knowledge of Node.JS / TypeScript / React / Next.JS.
- Worked with i18n libraries and third‑party translation services.
- Good knowledge of observability stacks and tooling (e.g. Grafana, ELK, Prometheus, Tracing).
