CNC Manufacturing Engineer (Mill/Turn – CAD/CAM Programmer)
Base salary: £50,000
Shift allowance: 16.6% – Monday to Friday (early and late shifts – 6am‑2pm / 2pm‑10pm)
Total package: £58,300 – Negotiable
Location: Birmingham
Key Responsibilities
- Create, develop, and optimise CNC programmes for mill/turn and multi‑axis machining operations.
- Support the introduction of new CNC machines and implement robust manufacturing processes from scratch.
- Take ownership of 70% CNC programming and 30% process engineering, ensuring alignment with best practice.
- Review drawings, models, and specifications to assess manufacturability and propose improvements (DFM).
- Lead and support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities, including variants of existing products.
- Work closely with design teams to review released drawings, provide manufacturing feedback, and suggest improvements.
- Conduct toolpath simulation and verification (experience with Vericut highly beneficial).
- Use CAM software (SolidCAM or equivalent) to generate efficient toolpaths and machining strategies.
- Identify process issues, implement root‑cause analysis, and lead continuous improvement activities.
- Support on the shop floor, resolve machining issues, and optimise cycle times and tooling efficiency.
- Collaborate with a mixed‑skill machining team across turning, milling, and combined mill‑turn capability.
- Contribute new ideas, process enhancements, and improvements to existing workflows.
- Produce setup sheets, tooling lists, and manufacturing documentation.
- Play a role in maintaining quality, safety, and operational standards.
Required Experience & Skills
- Proven experience with CNC mill/turn or multi‑tasking machining.
- Strong CAM programming experience (SolidCAM preferred, but any CAM package considered).
- Ability to develop machining processes from start to finish, including tooling selection, sequencing, and optimisation.
- Experience with NPI and introducing new part variations.
- Understanding of precision machining, tight tolerances, and complex geometries.
- Solid problem‑solving skills, with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Industry background flexible – aerospace or precision engineering advantageous.
- Candidates with as little as 6 months mill/turn experience will be considered if technically strong.
Team & Environment
Join a team of seven Manufacturing Engineers with a mix of senior and junior backgrounds.
Team currently split between milling and turning specialisms – this role bridges the combined mill‑turn capability.
Newly installed mill‑turn machines offer the chance to shape processes from the ground up.
Opportunities to become a highly valued technical point of reference within the team.
