The successful candidate will have a high level of flexibility and be committed to utilising their skills and abilities to assist in the smooth running of the Port Operations. In addition to serving as Master of the pilot boat when paired with a deckhand, while working alongside a Coxswain or Assistant Coxswain, the time spent in command of the vessel is expected to be shared equally. The Pilot Boat Relief Coxswain will also be responsible for assisting with planned maintenance tasks. This includes participating in scheduled inspections, repairs, and upkeep of vessels and associated equipment to ensure their operational readiness and compliance with safety standards. The role involves working closely with the maintenance team to execute tasks efficiently and to contribute to the overall reliability and performance of marine operations within the port. Working within the Port Operations Department to support the delivery of essential marine services on a 365/24/7 basis. This role will assist in the safe and efficient operation of the launches including routine maintenance and housekeeping. This role also includes assisting the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) in the administration and operation of vessel traffic scheduling and to undertake duties as required to meet the changing operational requirements of Port Operations. Key Responsibilities: Coxswain in command of a Pilot Boat, safely and efficiently transporting Pilots to and from ships You will be expected to assist with planned maintenance and upkeep tasks Responsibility for daily maintenance, recordkeeping and housekeeping of the Pilot Boats. Provide assistance to the VTS in the provision of administrative and operational support. Take responsibility for safety by reporting incidents, near misses and unsafe acts around the harbour. Essential Criteria: The role requires the post holder to be qualified to MCA Boat Master’s Licence standards or necessary equivalent valid for vessels of up to 24 meters in length used for commercial purposes and to maintain this qualification during tenure of the position. At least one of the following commercially endorsed certificates of competency: MCA Boat Master’s Licence STCW Master (Workboat less than 500GT unlimited area) STCW Master (Code Vessels less than 200GT unlimited area) RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean (Power) STCW Master (Code Vessels less than 200GT RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) RYA/MCA Powerboat Advanced Non-UK Certificate of Competency may be acceptable, with the condition that an accepted certificate as per the Workboat Code Edition 3 is obtained within 12 months of commencing the role. Full clean Driving Licence ENG1 or ML5 medical certificate Radio certificate (RYA SRC, GMDSS ROC or GOC) To provide key leadership and teamwork qualities Demonstrates a positive attitude regarding flexibility and the highest levels of customer service Demonstrate an aptitude to maintenance tasks Understanding of compliance standards as part of the Workboat Code. Ability to effectively communicate respectfully, both orally and in writing to all levels within BHC. Competent boat handling skillsKnowledge of a harbour and shipping environment Knowledge and confidence of working on or near water Understanding of regulatory framework Knowledge of health and safety legislation An understanding of implementing and reviewing risk assessments Applicants are required to have an appropriate level of computer literacy Capable of climbing quayside, beacon ladders and pilot ladders. Must hold an ML5 or ENG1 equivalent/higher medical certificate. Capable of operating in an exposed environment during all seasons and inclement weather conditions.
