Are you looking for a career in healthcare? Thirsk Doctors Surgery has an opening for an enthusiastic and motivated Phlebotomist / Healthcare Assistant to join our supportive and established team. The post is being offered at 16-30hpw, working Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6.30pm.

Main duties of the job

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assistclinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, healthpromotion and patient education whilst also supporting theadministrative/nursing teams on an as-required basis. Duties will include not not limited to: venepuncture, baseline observations eg blood pressure, temperature, pulse, BMI, advising patients of test results on the phone in, support nurses where required, new patient health checks, chaperoning, ECG’s.

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant.There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will bedependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Supportthe practice nurse with health promotion programmes.
  • Carryout baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature,and pulse rate, recording findings accurately.
  • Facilitateroutine home machine BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly.
  • Nurses phone in- advising patients oftest results.
  • Undertakewound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required and within trainedcompetencies.
  • Supportthe practice nurses with the management of chronic disease clinics.
  • Carryout BMI checks as directed.
  • Undertakevenepuncture, taking bloods.
  • Administer flu, covid, pneumococcal andshingles within trained competencies and attend training update courses whererequired.
  • Carryout ECGs as requested.
  • Urinalysis
  • Ensurespecimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation.
  • Deliver smoking cessation clinics andattend the training if required.
  • Dopplar’s
  • Providesupport during minor operations and medicals as required.
  • Following agreed clinical protocols withreferrals to the GP’s
  • Ensureall clinical rooms are adequately stocked, clean and tidy and prepared for eachsession, maintaining and cleaning equipment used by nurses & GP’s.
  • Ensurefridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance, recording andmonitoring of fridge temperatures.
  • Ordering stock from suppliers whenrequired, stock checks.
  • Ensureclinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced inaccordance with the organisations IPC policy.
  • Deliveropportunistic health promotion where appropriate.
  • Partake in mandatory eLearning and faceto face training.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Skills

  • Willingness and enthusiasm to train in clinical skills areas

Experience

  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting

Qualifications

  • GCSE in Math’s and English grade C or above
  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level.
  • Previous completion of the HCA Care Certificate
