Lead smarter systems. Build stronger teams.

Step into a pivotal leadership role where engineering excellence means real-world impact. As a Lead Systems Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping and managing operations for your respective systems-driving delivery, elevating quality, and ensuring critical systems run seamlessly.

You’ll play a key role in providing operational and digital landscapes, making sure applications and systems are not only available and secure, but built to the highest standards. Collaborating with architecture, product teams, service experts, and external partners, you’ll bring clarity, coordination, and confidence to complex delivery environments—reducing risk and enabling success.

This is more than oversight—it’s about influence. You’ll champion best practice, build team capability, and drive continuous improvement, stepping in hands‑on when it matters most to tackle complex challenges and keep everything moving forward.

What you’ll be doing

As a Lead Systems Engineer, you’ll lead and develop a high-performing engineering team while ensuring the reliable delivery and support of critical systems. You’ll oversee day‑to‑day operations, guide priorities, and step in to manage major incidents—keeping services stable and resilient.

You’ll be responsible for planning and coordinating work, aligning delivery with business and product goals, and ensuring changes are implemented smoothly and safely. Alongside this, you’ll champion engineering standards, assuring quality, compliance, and robust documentation across all activity.

Working closely with internal stakeholders and external partners, you’ll build strong relationships, hold vendors to account, and represent your team in key governance forums. You’ll also drive continuous improvement—introducing smarter ways of working, reducing technical debt, and helping your team grow their capability.

What does it take to be a Lead Systems Engineer?

  • Proven experience in business‑critical technology or operational leadership
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a relevant field
  • Experience in successfully leading teams and developing individuals
  • Recognised certification in relevant competency
  • Experience working cross‑functionally with both internal and external teams.
  • Experience identifying and supporting delivery of both technical and process improvements in a digital engineering environment
  • Experience working in an agile development team, where you’ve delivered incremental small slices, and are comfortable with responding to meet user needs
  • Experience identifying and supporting delivery of technical and process improvements.
  • Understanding of security, compliance, and safety considerations for digital and operational systems.
  • Strong experience with system integration and interfacing technologies (e.g., APIs, OPC UA, MQTT, vendor protocols).
  • Industry certifications (e.g., networking, ICS/OT security, vendor specific).
  • Knowledge of telephony architectures, digital communications platforms, and/or monitoring systems.
  • Exposure to cloud or hybrid infrastructure supporting operational systems.

We’re looking for a confident and collaborative leader who can communicate with impact and bring people together to get things done. You’ll be a natural problem‑solver, able to navigate complex and ambiguous situations with a calm, analytical approach.

With a solid understanding of service management and a focus on quality and compliance, you’ll balance technical insight with strong stakeholder engagement—confidently representing your team and influencing decisions both internally and externally.

  • Private healthcare and physiotherapy
  • 24‑hour Virtual GP service for you and your household
  • 26 days annual leave (rising with service)
  • Competitive pension scheme – Anglian Water double‑matches your contributions up to 6% (up to 18% combined)
