Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist (Part Time)
We are seeking an experienced part‑time consultant psychiatrist to provide senior medical cover at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone, Saltwood Ward – a 17‑bed low secure service for men with enduring mental illness including personality disorder.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as Responsible Clinician for all ward inpatients, providing overall medical leadership and oversight.
- Lead the provision of high‑quality care and ensure adherence to GMC standards and relevant professional guidelines.
- Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi‑disciplinary team.
- Assess referrals and conduct mental‑state examinations of service users.
- Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnoses and treatment, including advanced forensic psychiatric assessment.
- Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits.
- Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management and embed clinical governance within the service.
- Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managerial hearings, and attend hearings as required.
- Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for patient transfers and leave approvals.
- Maintain accurate patient records and ensure regular communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
- Contribute to academic meetings and uphold professional standards for CPD as set by the GMC, Department of Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Participate in the telephone on‑call rota.
Qualifications and Experience
- Fully GMC registered with an MBBS (or equivalent).
- Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC status.
- Experienced and knowledgeable in forensic psychiatry and mental‑health diagnosis.
- Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity.
- First‑rate communicator capable of interviewing, assessing, treating patients and producing clear, comprehensive medical notes.
- Committed to continued professional development and capable of working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
