The Opportunity
The Office of General Counsel is the in‑house legal team for the Ashurst Group globally. It advises the firm on constitutional, legal and regulatory issues, manages risk and governance, develops policies and prepares and negotiates contracts with third parties. It works closely with the Risk and Compliance team and is the escalation point for a range of legal and regulatory questions, including client terms of engagement, ethics queries, data protection, anti‑money laundering, bribery and corruption, tax evasion and conflicts issues.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the development and implementation of the firm’s three‑year audit plan.
- Coordinate audits covering ISO controls, regulatory and risk‑focused audits, and client contractual commitments.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across the firm’s offices to agree audit scopes.
- Assist with reporting audit progress to the Risk Committee.
- Work with colleagues at all levels of seniority across the business and build strong relationships with partners, lawyers and business support staff.
- Support ISO 9001, ISO 22301 and ISO 27001 audits and help maintain certifications.
- Promote continuous improvement of the internal audit process in a fast‑paced environment.
This is a full‑time, permanent role based in either London or Glasgow with hybrid working.
Qualifications
- Part‑qualified or newly qualified auditors (e.g., working towards CIA or equivalent internal/external audit qualifications) with 1+ year audit or assurance experience, ideally in a law firm or professional services practice.
- Awareness of ISO 9001, 22301 and/or 27001 or a willingness to learn about these standards and assist with audits of ISO‑related controls.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders.
- Capacity to manage a high‑volume, varied workload in a fast‑paced environment.
- Adaptable, collaborative, team‑focused, yet able to work independently in an international organisation.
- Confidence in developing strong working relationships with partners, lawyers, business support staff, and external parties.
- Desire to learn new skills, including using AI tools to deliver excellent results for audit stakeholders.
